Frank Sinatra caught drunk at wheel by Dean Martin

[afn]++++++ An actor who plays Frank Sinatra today said he was "very ashamed" after he was caught drink-driving by a policeman called... Dean Martin.

Stephen Triffitt, who plays Ol' Blue Eyes in the West End Show The Rat Pack Live from Las Vegas, said he was not proud of the incident in spite of the humour of the situation.

He was found to be drink-driving after PC Martin stopped him for jumping a red light in the Hounslow area of west London. The 43-year-old actor had been on his way home to Windsor, Berkshire. He had been drinking with friends after missing a show because of gridlock caused by a flash flood. Triffitt pleaded guilty on September 13 at Feltham Magistrates Court to driving over the limit and received a 16-month driving ban and £500 fine.

Former househusband Triffitt, who shot to fame after he won second place in ITV's Stars In Their Eyes in 2000, said in a statement that he sincerely apologised for "letting everyone down".

"There is a humorous side to the Dean Martin element of the story, I couldn't believe it myself when the policeman told me his name, but I don't underestimate the gravity of the situation for one moment and have certainly learned my lesson," he said.
"I am very ashamed of the incident.

A police source quoted in The Sun newspaper said: "The guy just couldn't believe it when the officer finally identified himself.
"We couldn't believe it either when PC Dean Martin came back to the station and said he had nicked Frank Sinatra."

Sinatra, who died in 1998 aged 83, and Martin, who died in 1995 at 78, were legendary hell-raisers. Along with Sammy Davis Jnr, Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop, Hollywood nicknamed them the Rat Pack.
